The Lower House

Unbelief does not always mean exile. It can mean a lower house.

The first witnesses were not thrown out of the story. They were ranked by it. That is a harder sentence than damnation, because it leaves a man inside the house and still names what he buried.

Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

The saying is a level, not a slogan. Whoever loosens the least of the commands and teaches men so shall be called least in the kingdom. Whoever does them and teaches them shall be called great. The kingdom has rooms that are not equal. John is not describing a hostel of identical beds when he writes of many dwellings. He is describing a Father’s house in which place is given, and given according to what was done with what was already in the hand.

The talent parables are the same architecture in story form. A man is not judged for failing to steal a larger gift. He is judged for burying the one he had. Increase or burial. That is the whole exam. Unbelief does not always mean exile. It can mean a lower house inside the same Father’s house. That is a severe reading, not a soft one. Softness would say the burial never happened. Severity says the burial happened, and the man still belongs to the house, and the house still has a lower floor.

This is why gilding the Apostles is not kindness. Kindness would let the ranking stand so that later men can see where they are standing. If Peter’s denial is rewritten as a brief chill, then every later ceiling on Christ’s claim can be rewritten as temperament. The text is less pastoral and more useful. It shows a man who loved Him, ran, was restored to the flock, and was still told that his last road would not be chosen. Love did not cancel measure. Mercy did not cancel the house’s floors.

A generation that postpones His dominion is not, by that fact, outside the Name. It may be inside the Name and still teaching men to loosen the present tense. Least is not nothing. Least is still a verdict. The danger of the lower house is that it feels inhabited. There are lamps. There is language. There is a calendar of His return. A man can live there his whole life and call the ceiling faithfulness, because the ceiling is painted with tomorrow.
